Palme De Seje is a type of palm tree that grows in humid environments throughout Central South America. This tree produces seje palm oil which has many uses. These baskets are made from the flower of the tree which produces fruits. It is harvested in April and May. The branches (which are considered part of the flower) are cut from the tree and are soaked and cleaned to remove any impurities. They are then dried for a few weeks and ready to be used in making products such as baskets, lamps, trays, and so much more.
These rustic baskets are made by different Artisans throughout Colombia who are part of a non-profit organization that helps support children’s education in the region of Ayapel, Cordoba, Colombia. The organization also teaches families how to craft these baskets so that they can earn a living. The organization is an ecofriendly company that plants trees and works with local Universities to improve the region’s economy. It was started in 2003 by twenty individual Artisans who have turned it into the most important economic resource in that region.
